When Is Forklift Operator Training Required

The simple answer is anytime you hire a new employee with refresher training every three years.  However, to provide a truly safe operating environment for your lift truck operators and pedestrians, you need to provide training in accordance with OSHA Standards.

  • Anytime an operator has to operate a piece of equipment he or she has not operated. Training is equipment specific.
  • When conditions in which your lift trucks will operate changes, including facility expansion or new types of rack, docks or other equipment.
  • If an employee has an accident or appears to be operating unsafely.
  • Anytime you make a change to your current equipment, such as adding attachments, changing fuel types, or introduce a new piece of equipment.
